VET or university?

Higher education providers and Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutes offer courses in similar business disciplines, however there is a difference in the depth of study.

Higher education provider

  • courses are longer and cover subjects in greater depth — business degrees are usually three years in length if done full time
  • degree study is most likely to take you further in your chosen business career, so if you have the ability and desire to go to university or other higher education provider this is your best option

VET

  • VET associate diplomas or diplomas are usually two years full time
  • if you think university or higher education is not for you, VET is an ideal alternative

Many students complete a VET course and then realise that they need a degree for their career to develop as they want.

Many higher education providers (not all) will allow admission on the basis of a VET qualification or grant status for VET studies (up to one year out of three) — it doesn't always matter if you didn't do the right subjects at school. This gives added flexibility, but doing a VET course and then the degree will take longer.
