Negotiating your wage

Once you have been offered a job the discussion and negotiation isn't necessarily over. One of the most intimidating aspects of getting a new job can be negotiating your wage.

Being prepared for any salary negotiations is the best way to get what you want.

Before you go into a salary discussion make sure you've researched your value in the marketplace, that is your general market value based on skills and experience, and your value to your employer — how you will contribute to the organisation.

Have prepared some valid reasons for why you believe you are at a particular level.

Finally, be prepared to be flexible. Not all jobs will have room for negotiation, and you may have to decide what you are prepared to accept for the experience.
